- Scott . F .Fitzgerald

Little Space Between.

A series of Improvised moments that will explore relationships through the personal connection we each have with love, sex and Intimacy. A group of experienced Improvisers will be taking a leap of faith into the deep and complex world of Intimate relationships. Some that may involve physical and sexual attraction as well as liking, belonging, loving, a need to be cared for and good old fashioned romance.

Warning: This show is completely improvised and therefore we cannot determine what the outcome will be, but hopefully we will explore comedy, tragedy and the surreal. Anything is possible!

Every now and then I have a moment of anxiety around ‘teaching’ improv. How can you teach a bunch of people to make stuff up? Well, that isn’t what you ‘teach’. What you end up teaching is all the things people need to let go of, all the stuff that stops them, from being in the moment, and ready to make things up.

The thing that brand new improvisers find so hard to believe is that they aren’t alone and that making stuff up is a shared experience. For a few show offs this is devastating news. Their vision is of being on stage in front of the audience and saying hilarious stuff, that they are just thinking about right there and then, and the audience laughing. For those people learning how to listen and share is a real challenge. But most brand new improvisers are suddenly filled with the sweetest relief when they really learn to believe that they will be making it up together. The weight of responsibility and fear and and self-consciousness starts to lift, and there is real give and take.

So teaching improv is really only teaching people how to trust.

But then, when I think about Thursdays at Thornton Hall I get those weird thrills. Really. I am so lucky to be in this amazing position of making it up for fun for two whole weeks. Please come to a show or two and watch us improvise as if it were scripted. Only better, because we ar making it up.

Jam Sandwich, our monthly long form improv show at the fabulous Upstairs at Alexander Bar, had its premier performance last night, and it was great. Old hand improvisers, me, Ryan, Lisa and Leon welcomed brand new first timer Zanne onto stage and she was fantastic, as we improvised a La Ronde and then a free second half inspired by what had come before. It was sexy, delicious, original improv and our audience gave us wonderful, enthusiastic feedback. We will be doing some more, different long form improv there every month on the last (or in January’s case the second last) Thursday of the month, so please come and take a look if you want to see us do stuff that isn’t the usual short form games.

We christened Upstairs at Alexander Bar with improv on Saturday afternoon because fave player Ryan Jales decided to do what he loves on his birthday; improvise. He invited his friends to watch while we had the time of our lives performing a format we learned in Oz called Stuck in The Middle. It was great practice on the stage because…

On December 27 we perform our first experimental, free-form, long form, once a month improv show called Jam Sandwich there, Upstairs at The Alexander. It is a small stage, so it will be a few players, and we will be doing scenes, that are definitely made up. That’s pretty much all we know. Oh, and that it will be amazing. Please, don’t be sad you missed it. Tickets are flying off the Alexander Bar booking interweb place.

For those of you who want a leetle more info before you part with your hard earned R80, what it will definitely be is some of Improguise’s most experienced players doing some freshly made improv, just without the usual strict short game format of TheatreSports. I personally can’t wait. It is going to be pretty fabulous, and the theatre is gorgeous.
